LIE OR LAY??? Confusing verbs
These three verbs are every student's nightmare. Read carefully about them and please, note their form for the Gerund, they have spelling differences!!!! No time to read? Check out the pic below!
Let's start with the easy one. Everybody knows the REGULAR VERB "LIE" (mentir)
- LIE LIED LIED
- Do not lie to me, please!
- She was lying the whole time.
- It was obvious that they lied about their experience.
Things get complicated when two similar verbs come into scene. Even though you may have seen and even studied them in advance, they always cause insecurity and confusion and need some web checking to avoid mistakes.
On the one hand, we have the IRREGULAR TRANSITIVE VERB "LAY"
- LAY LAID LAID (to put something down flat, i..e., "poner" in Spanish) as it is a transitive verb, it will be followed by an object. (Poner un huevo , la mesa, ladrillos...)
- The hen laid an egg.
- I am laying the table.
- The worker was told to lay the bricks in line.
On the other hand, we have the INTRANSITIVE VERB LIE (watch it! Not the regular one!!!)
- LIE LAY LAIN (to be in a flat position or surface, i. e., "yacer o estar tumbado" as an intransitive verb, it lacks an object afterwards.
- I love to lie down on the sofa after lunch.
- He has lain there all day.
- She is still lying down.

Historic or Historical?
Everything historic is historical, but not everything historical is historic.
To be Historic, the event or thing we are referring to must be important, have made history, apart from merely having taken place.

Shade or Shadow?
Whenever I want to say "sombra" in English, I'd better be careful with my choice. I must specify what kind of "sombra" I am referring to: a shelter or a shilouette? Watch the image to learn the correct word in English.

ROB vs STEAL
Hi there! Are these two verbs confusing for you? No wonder!! Some people are taught "funny" stories like "Rob" is used for expensive articles and "Steal" for cheap ones.
I hope this rule will help you out:
- STEAL is used + the stolen OBJECT
- ROB is used + the PERSON or INSTITUION victim of the theft.
In short, the rule is dead easy: You steal things and rob people!!!
You can say "Mary stole my pen", but never say "Mary stole me"***

The Irregular Verb Project
If you are trying to learn one of the most feared grammar aspects: Irregular verbs! and don't know how, TRY THE FOLLOWING METHOD. It is both easy and effective. Let's do it!
a) Pair work: After a first analysis of the verbs' list, write down the different groups you and your partner are able to spot.
We are resolved to stand up for a meaningful learning of these troublesome friends. Therefore, we will analyse them, classify them depending on their form and group them in colours for a better understanding and memorization.
SESSION ONE
a) Pair work: After a first analysis of the verbs' list, write down the different groups you and your partner are able to spot.b) Group work: Whole class discussion to reach a consensus and stablish a set number of groups.
Students try to classify all the verbs from their list using the grouping suggested. We will see how effective or defective our proposals are.
SESSION TWO
a) Group work: After adjusting any deficiencies, the class will list irregular verbs into separate pieces of paper according to verb behaviour and will assign one given colour to each group.***
b) Individual work: Students will highlight each verb on their workbook list using the chosen colour.
***(The students' proposals were:
-Vowel Change
-Same form for the three verbs
-Same base but different past and past participle
-Different base but same past and past participle
-All three forms are different)
FINAL PRODUCT
a) Each student will design a customised Irregular Verb Booklet to revise and consult the content in the future.
For quicker lesson plannings, you can present this lesson via similar content-based pins from Pinterest or espressoenglish ;)

Mind Mapping Vocabulary
Word lists are dull as hell. They lack any fun, creatvity or entertainment. However, just grouping those same words in categories can turn into a real challenge and a plastic alternative learning strategy. We tried today with a PMAR 3 group and all the free time activities were organised their way... Not too bad, huh?
